Coloring Tips
A unicorn has no correct colour, and that is the whole appeal. Every other animal on this site has an answer — a robin is red, a Dalmatian is spotted. A unicorn is the one page where a child cannot get it wrong, which makes it a good thing to hand over after a set where accuracy mattered.
The mane is where the rainbow goes. Keeping the body one soft colour and putting every bright shade into the mane and tail looks far better than colouring the whole animal in stripes. It is also how nearly every illustrated unicorn is drawn.
The horn wants a spiral. Most of these horns have a twist drawn into them. Alternating two tones along the spiral, or leaving every other section white, makes it look carved rather than flat.
Leave a white patch on the body. Unicorns are usually drawn pale, and a page filled edge to edge loses that. Leaving the chest and muzzle mostly white, with colour only at the edges, keeps the animal looking bright.
Patterned pages want a repeating palette. On the galaxy, geometric and pixel designs, choosing four or five colours and repeating them across the shape reads far better than giving every facet its own.
Start young children on the baby unicorns. The two baby designs and the simple walking unicorn have the fewest lines. Save the detailed portrait and the steampunk one for someone older.

Greek writers described it as a real animal living in India, not as a myth — Ctesias wrote about it around 400 BC, and Pliny repeated the account four centuries later. The single spiral horn came into European art much later, and was helped along by traders selling narwhal tusks as unicorn horn, which is exactly what a unicorn horn is usually drawn to look like.
