When to print them

The date moves depending on where you are. The United States, Australia and most of Asia mark it on the second Sunday in May, the United Kingdom and Ireland in March, and much of Europe at the end of May. Worth checking before a classroom plans around it.

Coloring Tips

Color the letters last. On the fourteen lettered pages, the words are the thing a mother will actually look at. Doing the background and the flowers first means your hand is steady and your pencils are chosen by the time you reach them.

Two colors in the lettering beats six. Outlined words look best filled in one color with a second used only for a shadow down one side. A different color per letter turns a card into a jumble and is much harder to read from across a room.

Leave a white edge around the hearts. On the wreath, the rose frame and the handprint page, leaving a thin unfilled line between each heart and whatever is behind it keeps the shapes separate. Without it they merge into one red mass.

Write something on the back. These are being given away rather than kept, and a line of a child’s own handwriting on the reverse is worth more than anything on the front. Leaving the back blank is a missed opportunity.

Start younger children on the handprints and the teacup. Those two have the largest open shapes. The floral arch, the rose heart wreath and the pages with figures have the most detail and suit an older child.
