76 Lightning McQueen Coloring Pages (Free PDF Printables)

Lightning McQueen is the character children ask for by name, but a set of only Lightning McQueen coloring pages runs out of ideas quickly — there are so many angles you can draw one red race car from. This collection takes the wider view: 76 designs covering McQueen and the cars he races, lives with and learns from.

McQueen himself appears in seventeen designs, and most of them are with somebody. Racing Chick Hicks, racing Jackson Storm, up against Francesco Bernoulli, learning from Doc Hudson, alongside Cruz Ramirez, beside Sally, and three pages with Mater — the friendship the whole first film turns on.

Chick Hicks gets nine pages, more than anyone except McQueen. Front grille, side profile, number 86, at the stadium, holding a trophy, and racing both McQueen and The King. Sally Carrera also gets nine, from a straightforward side view to Radiator Springs and the race track.

The spy cars from the second film have a strong showing: eight Finn McMissile designs and three of Holley Shiftwell, including her wings out. Francesco Bernoulli, the Italian Formula One racer, has five. Jackson Storm, the rival from the third film, has four.

Radiator Springs is well covered too. Mater in eight designs, Ramone the lowrider in seven with his flame paintwork, Fillmore the peace van in three, Doc Hudson in six, Sheriff, Mack the truck, and Mia and Tia outside Flo’s cafe. The King appears in five, all in Dinoco blue.

Difficulty varies with the drawing. The straight side and front views are clean shapes with large panels — good for a four- or five-year-old. The stadium scenes, the desert canyons and the pages with two or three cars have considerably more going on.

The Cars in This Collection

Lightning McQueen

Seventeen designs, mostly with another car. Racing Chick Hicks and Jackson Storm, against Francesco Bernoulli, learning from Doc Hudson, with Cruz Ramirez, with Sally, and three with Mater. He is red with a lightning bolt down the side and the number 95, which is the year Pixar released Toy Story.

Mater

Eight designs. The rusty tow truck who never washes, drawn here in the desert with his hook out, covered in Radiator Springs stickers, in Dinoco blue, and three times alongside McQueen. Brown with rust patches, one headlight missing and a dented bonnet.

Chick Hicks

Nine designs, the largest group after McQueen. Green with a moustache-shaped grille and the number 86 — a reference to the year Pixar was founded. He is the one who wins by pushing others off the track.

Sally Carrera

Nine designs. A blue Porsche 911 with a pinstripe tattoo on her back bumper, drawn here at Radiator Springs, at the stadium, at the race track and alongside Mater, Cruz and McQueen.

Doc Hudson

Six designs. The Hudson Hornet, three-time Piston Cup champion, retired to Radiator Springs as the town doctor. Dark blue with the number 51. He was voiced by Paul Newman, who was a real racing driver as well as an actor.

Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell

Eleven designs between them, from the second film. Finn is the silver British spy car with gadgets; Holley is the purple agent with wings. The pages with weapons and wings extended are the most detailed in that group.

Francesco Bernoulli and Jackson Storm

Nine designs. Francesco is the open-wheeled Italian racer in red, white and green; Jackson Storm is the dark blue next-generation rival with the number 20. Both are the antagonists McQueen has to measure himself against.

The King

Five designs, all in Dinoco blue with the number 43 — the real number of Richard Petty, who voiced him and who won the NASCAR championship seven times.

Radiator Springs

Ramone the purple lowrider with flames in seven designs, Fillmore the peace-painted VW bus in three, Sheriff the police car, Mack the transporter, and Mia and Tia outside Flo’s cafe. The town is loosely based on real places along Route 66.

Coloring Tips

The liveries are the whole point. McQueen is red with yellow lightning and 95 on the door. Chick Hicks is green with 86. The King is light blue with 43. Doc Hudson is dark blue with 51. Getting the numbers and colours right is what turns a car into a character, and children notice immediately.

Save the windscreens. Every car in this world has eyes in the windscreen. Leaving the white of the eye unfilled and colouring only the iris is what stops a page looking like a car with a face painted on it.

Chrome is white with grey edges. Bumpers, grilles, hubcaps and Ramone’s trim all read as metal if you leave the middle bright and shade only where the shape turns.

Ramone is the free page. He repaints himself in every scene of the film, so no colour is wrong on any of his seven designs. Hand those to a child who wants to use the whole tin.

Racing pages want speed lines. The stadium and track designs read as fast, but nothing on the page says so. A few pencil strokes trailing behind the rear wheels finishes them off.

Start young children on the side views. The plain side and front profiles — Sally, Ramone, Jackson Storm, Chick Hicks — have the largest open panels. Save the stadium crowds and the desert canyons for someone older.
